Chartered by the Texas Legislature on May 26, 1873, to build from Fort Worth to the Texas-New Mexico State line and connect with a line to Denver, Colorado. Came under control of General Grenville Dodge in 1881 and began construction that year. First rail line to cross the Texas Panhandle. Served area hauling cattle from the ranches to market.
